Guitar painting is an art form all its own. At first glance, it might seem like a purely cosmetic choice—after all, a guitar is meant to be played—but for many musicians and collectors, the finish is just as important as the wood, pickups, or strings. The truth is, not every guitar painter is the same, and their talent, quality, and vision vary widely, shaping the instrument in profoundly different ways.
In this eclectic world, some painters excel at precision, creating flawlessly smooth finishes with professional-grade lacquer or polyurethane. Others bring artistry and creativity to the table, crafting one-of-a-kind designs, intricate patterns, or bold color combinations that turn a guitar into a visual statement. Then there are those whose work falls somewhere in between—technically competent, but without a distinctive vision—reminding us that skill alone is not enough.
The materials and techniques used make a huge difference. Nitrocellulose lacquer, beloved for its vintage look and aging qualities, requires patience and exacting skill. Acrylic and urethane paints, on the other hand, offer durability and vibrancy but demand mastery to avoid uneven coats or finish defects. A talented painter knows not only how to apply these materials but how to manipulate them to complement the guitar’s natural curves, textures, and tonewoods.
Perhaps most importantly, guitar painting is about vision. Some painters see a blank guitar body as a canvas waiting for storytelling, while others focus on craftsmanship, ensuring the finish enhances playability and longevity. It’s this combination of technical expertise and artistic sensibility that separates good painters from truly exceptional ones. A well-painted guitar doesn’t just look stunning—it feels right in the hand, inspires the musician, and becomes a piece of living art.
In the end, the world of guitar painting is as diverse as the guitars themselves. Each artist brings a unique mix of talent, quality, and vision, and the results reflect the depth of their creativity. For musicians, collectors, or fans, understanding this diversity is key: a guitar’s finish is more than skin-deep—it’s a statement, an experience, and a testament to the artistry behind the instrument.

On stage, a guitar isn’t just an instrument; it’s part of the performance, and Mazola’s finishes make sure it commands attention from the first glance.
Technically, Mazola demonstrates mastery over materials and application. Whether it’s acrylic, urethane, or a complex multi-layered finish, the work is smooth, durable, and precise. But beyond technical skill, what sets Mazola apart is vision. Each piece shows personality, creativity, and a clear understanding of how color, pattern, and tone interact to enhance the guitar’s identity.
The true magic happens when artistry meets functionality. A guitar painted by Mazola isn’t just visually stunning—it feels right in the hand. Neck contour, body curves, and even weight distribution are considered, making sure that the instrument remains a joy to play, not just a showpiece. In a world where many painters focus solely on appearance, Mazola bridges the gap between art and performance, proving that a guitar can be both a visual masterpiece and a musical weapon.

INTERVIEW WITH MAZOLAS GUITAR PAINT AND GUITAR THRILLS MAGAZINE
Guitar Thrills: How did you get started in guitar painting, and what drew you to this specialized art form?
Marcilio: Since I was a child, I've enjoyed painting and customizing all my belongings. A friend asked me to paint a guitar, and then more people started asking for my services. That's when I decided to specialize in painting instruments.
Guitar Thrills: What sets your painting style apart from other guitar finishers in the industry?
Marcillo:The care, dedication, and respect I put into doing my best on each instrument.
Guitar Thrills: Do you have a favorite type of finish or material to work with, and why?
Marcillo: My preference is to work with urethane because it lasts longer and allows me to achieve maximum shine and perfection in the result.
Guitar Thrills: How do you balance artistic creativity with the technical requirements of a durable, playable guitar?
Marcillo: I always try to analyze beforehand the best way to do it, using techniques to keep the paint with very thin layers.
Guitar Thrills: Can you walk us through your process, from concept to the final clear-coat finish?
Marcillo: First, the wood pores are sealed, then I apply a base coat and varnish. If it's natural wood, I apply a clear varnish. I wait for it to dry. After that, I sand off the varnish and apply more varnish. After 72 hours, I begin the polishing process, where I pay close attention to make it as perfect as possible.
Se for natural, aplico o verniz transparentes. Espero secar.
Guitar Thrills: Have you ever had to adapt a design mid-project, and how did you handle it?
Marcillo: Yes, especially with custom paintings, because the process doesn't always go as planned, requiring you to remain calm and rethink how you're going to do it.
Guitar Thrills: What role does the musician’s personality or playing style play in your design choices?
Marcillo: The musician's tastes generally provide direction for the design and painting, and the person's own energy allows it to flow.
Guitar Thrills: How do you decide between bold, eye-catching designs versus subtle, classic finishes?
Marcillo: Most of the time, the client already comes with an idea or image to recreate in the painting. But, in some cases, the wood of the instrument itself is what makes it unique, with a one-of-a-kind design.
Guitar Thrills: What’s the most challenging or unusual guitar you’ve ever painted?
Marcillo: The most challenging was the Killer KG Prime model guitar, with its mosaic paint job, by the legendary Japanese guitarist Akira Takasaki.
