A new generation of guitarists is reshaping blues and roots music—not by abandoning tradition, but by bending it into new forms. These artists grew up studying the language of legends like Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, and Eric Clapton, yet they refuse to be confined by it. Instead, they’re fusing blues with rock, soul, punk attitude, and modern production, creating something that feels both familiar and forward-looking.

Artists like Samantha Fish, Gary Clark Jr., Marcus King, and Christone Kingfish Ingram exemplify this movement. Each carries deep respect for blues tradition, yet their music stretches into rock, funk, soul, and even hip-hop textures. Their success signals a broader shift: audiences are no longer looking for pure revivalism—they want evolution.

Within this wave, Leilani Kilgore occupies a particularly interesting space.

At first glance, Kilgore fits comfortably alongside her peers. Like Samantha Fish, she brings fierce, riff-driven energy. Like Gary Clark Jr., she channels a raw emotional core rooted in blues phrasing. And like Marcus King, she balances technical skill with soulful expression. But what sets Kilgore apart is not just how she plays—it’s where she seems to be heading.

While many contemporary blues artists expand outward from tradition, Kilgore often collides genres head-on. There’s a noticeable edge in her sound—an undercurrent of alternative rock and even punk—that feels less like homage and more like reinvention. Her songs don’t simply reinterpret blues structures; they sometimes dismantle them, rebuilding with heavier tones, sharper dynamics, and a more modern emotional palette.

This difference hints at something larger. Kilgore isn’t just preserving blues in a new context—she appears to be transitioning beyond it. Part of this evolution lies in her approach to production and songwriting. Where traditional blues emphasizes space, groove, and restraint, Kilgore leans into immediacy and impact. Her recordings often capture a live-wire intensity, favoring rawness over polish. This gives her music a sense of urgency that resonates with younger audiences who may not have grown up with blues but connect with its emotional honesty.

Another factor is her identity as both a guitarist and a frontwoman. In a lineage historically dominated by male players, Kilgore represents a shift—not just in representation, but in perspective. Her voice, both literal and artistic, brings a different narrative weight to the genre. It’s not just about technical proficiency; it’s about storytelling that feels current and personal.

What makes her trajectory especially compelling is that she hasn’t fully arrived at a fixed sound. Artists like Gary Clark Jr. and Marcus King have already established distinct musical identities. Kilgore, by contrast, feels like she’s still in motion—and that motion is where the excitement lies. There’s a sense that her current work is only a foundation for something more expansive.

In many ways, she embodies the next phase of this blues renaissance. If the previous wave proved that blues could be modernized, artists like Kilgore suggest it can be transformed entirely absorbing new influences until genre boundaries start to dissolve.

The new blues vanguard isn’t about revival. It’s about reinterpretation, tension, and risk. And among its rising voices, Leilani Kilgore stands out not just for her talent, but for her potential to push the music somewhere it hasn’t quite gone before.

The Guitar Thrills Perspective: Where Tradition Meets Voltage

There’s a certain moment every guitar fan recognizes—the instant a player stops sounding like their influences and starts sounding like themselves. That moment, that shift, is what defines the modern blues-rock resurgence. It’s no longer about who can play like Jimi Hendrix or channel B.B. King the most convincingly. It’s about who can take that language and push it somewhere new without losing its soul. That’s the space where today’s most exciting players live.

Artists like Samantha Fish, Gary Clark Jr., Marcus King, and Christone Kingfish Ingram all deliver that thrill in different ways. Fish hits with raw, unapologetic firepower. Clark bends blues into something sleek and modern. King pours Southern soul into every phrase. Kingfish carries the torch with jaw-dropping technical command. Together, they prove that blues guitar isn’t fading—it’s mutating. But from a true guitar-centric perspective—the kind that obsesses over tone, attack, phrasing, and feel—Leilani Kilgore brings a different kind of electricity. She doesn’t just play the blues. She pressurizes it.

Where many modern players expand the genre outward, Kilgore compresses it, tightens it, and then lets it explode. Her riffs feel dense, almost confrontational at times, with a punch that leans closer to garage rock or even punk than traditional blues. There’s less space, more urgency. Less polish, more edge. And that edge is exactly where the thrill lives.

Technically, what stands out isn’t just what she plays—but how she attacks the instrument. There’s a physicality to her playing: sharp accents, aggressive pick dynamics, and a willingness to let notes snarl rather than sing cleanly. It’s a style that values impact over perfection, attitude over tradition. That’s a deliberate choice—and it signals evolution.

Compared to someone like Gary Clark Jr., who often lets notes breathe and burn slowly, Kilgore tends to drive forward, pushing phrases with momentum. Compared to Samantha Fish, whose playing can swing between finesse and fire, Kilgore often stays in the red operating at a higher baseline intensity. And unlike Marcus King, whose phrasing leans deeply into soul and fluidity, Kilgore introduces tension—edges that don’t always resolve comfortably.

That tension is important. It’s what makes her feel less like a continuation and more like a disruption. From the “guitar thrills” lens, the question isn’t just “Can she play?”—it’s “Does she make you feel something immediate?” And Kilgore does. There’s a raw, almost reckless energy in her tone that recalls the spirit of Jack White more than the smooth lineage of traditional blues. It’s unpredictable. It’s slightly dangerous. And that unpredictability is where modern guitar culture is heading.

What suggests she may evolve into something greater is her refusal to settle into a single identity. Many players in this space eventually lock into a signature style—recognizable, refined, but fixed. Kilgore still feels in flux. Her sound is not fully resolved, and that’s a strength. It means she’s still absorbing, still experimenting, still pushing against her own boundaries. If she continues this trajectory—leaning into that hybrid of blues foundation and alternative aggression—she could move beyond the current blues-rock wave entirely. Not just as a standout player within the genre, but as someone who helps redefine what guitar-driven music sounds like for the next generation.

From a pure guitar perspective, that’s the ultimate thrill: not just hearing great playing but witnessing the moment before an artist breaks into something bigger than the genre that shaped them.

ABOUT LEILANI KILGORE

Leilani Kilgore is an American blues-rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter based in Nashville, Tennessee. She’s known for her gritty guitar tone, powerful voice, and energetic live performances that blend classic blues with a modern rock edge.

Originally from Southern California, Kilgore began playing guitar as a teenager and quickly developed a passion for blues and rock music. She later attended Berklee College of Music on scholarship, which helped refine her musicianship and songwriting. After relocating to Nashville, she built her career through touring, live performances, and developing her sound as both a solo artist and bandleader.

Her music centers on blues rock but pulls from a wide range of influences, including rock, southern roots, punk, and even elements of classical music. She’s often described as a non-traditional blues artist because she doesn’t stay confined to one genre, instead blending styles into a raw, contemporary sound. Her playing features aggressive riffs, expressive phrasing, and emotionally driven songwriting.

Kilgore cites legendary guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Jimmy Page, Joe Bonamassa, and Jack White as major influences. These inspirations are evident in her mix of classic blues techniques and modern rock intensity.

Her debut album, Tell Your Ghost (2025), helped establish her as a rising artist in the blues-rock scene. The album includes songs like “High/Low,” “Early Grave,” and “I’m Gonna Leave You,” and was notably self-produced in a short time to capture a live, unpolished energy.

In addition to her recordings, Kilgore is known for her strong live presence. She has performed extensively and has opened for major artists such as Buddy Guy. Her performances are often praised for their intensity and connection with the audience, reinforcing her reputation as a compelling modern blues-rock performer.

Overall, Leilani Kilgore stands out as part of a new generation of guitarists who honor traditional blues while pushing it into fresh, contemporary territory.

INTERVIEW WITH LEILANI KILGORE AND GUITAR THRILLS MAGAZINE

Guitar Thrills: You come from a blues foundation, but your sound pushes beyond it—when did you first realize you didn’t want to stay confined to traditional blues?

Leilani: Commit to one sound or another has always caused a bit of discomfort for me, honestly. I tried for many years to fit myself into the blues box because it’s where my love for guitar first really took root, and I thought that my passion for it meant that it was my pathway. But the fact of the matter is, my first musical love was rock and roll. And the older I got and the more I developed my sound as an artist, the clearer it became that sticking to blues simply isn’t my style. Now I get to honor my passion for blues by pushing it into new styles.

Guitar Thrills: Your playing has a very physical, aggressive attack compared to many modern blues artists—how conscious are you of that when you’re on stage?

Leilani: VERY conscious - it gets brought up a lot! I don’t think I even realized I was doing it for a while, I just wanted to put in as much aggression into the guitar as I was hoping to get out. I embraced the “challenge yourself, fight your surroundings” philosophy early on, and always want to feel present in the moment.  I want the audience to feel it, too. Now I embrace it as a distinctive part of my performance.

Guitar Thrills: There’s a sense of tension and urgency in your riffs that feels closer to rock or even punk—what influences outside of blues are shaping your sound right now?

Leilani: Part of what drew me to playing guitar in the first place was the astounding amount of expression you can achieve with the instrument, and any riff that conveyed anger or simple blade-in-teeth tough was immediately attractive to me. It still is. I find a lot of that kind of inspiration from rock and rock sub-genres - I love hearing new riffs or tones that get my heart racing. But I also look to traditional blues and jazz for dynamics, and Americana or indie for guidance on really great songwriting or lyrics. Frankly, I’m at the point in my life where I’m open to listening to anything, as long as it’s good.

Guitar Thrills: A lot of players eventually settle into a signature style, but your sound still feels like it’s evolving—do you feel like you’re still searching for something musically?

Leilani: Yes and no. If anything, I’m searching for any way to tangibly create what I’m feeling internally when I think about my music. It has an electricity and edge that I’m constantly trying to pin down. If you had asked me this last year, I would have said that there were a lot more questions than answers as far as my sound is concerned. But the broad spectrum of sound on my first album got a lot of that out of my system, and now I can hone in on what I really feel drawn to.

Guitar Thrills: From a tone perspective, what matters more to you: clarity and precision, or raw energy and impact?

Leilani: Knee-jerk reaction is raw energy and impact. I don’t think any player should use a tone they can’t still reign in and control, but then again we have Nirvana’s “Bleach” album, which has some of the sludgiest most indiscernible guitar tone I’ve ever heard and it still manages to have a serious influence on the listener. I think it all comes down to intention and knowing how to convey that, regardless of what the tone is.

Guitar Thrills: You’ve recently been performing with the Zaar Cicero guitar—what drew you to that instrument in the first place?

Leilani: I have always secretly wanted a shredder guitar, and the Cicero is PERFECT for that. It is a Dodge Challenger on steroids, with a small enough body that you can fly around on that thing with in zero inhibition. It’s lightweight, well balanced, and the pickups offer an astounding range of tone. It makes me feel like the little metal monster I’ve always hoped I could be some day.

Guitar Thrills: How has the Zaar Cicero guitar influenced your tone and playing style compared to what you were using before?

Leilani: Speed, baby!!! That guitar just begs for fast riffs and devastating drop C chugs. I want my playing to be heavier, cleaner, and scarier than ever. You just can’t get that kind of sound out of a Tele or a Strat.

Guitar Thrills: Are there specific qualities of the Zaar Cicero guitar—like its feel, response, or pickup character—that have changed the way you approach riffs or solos?

Leilani: I feel like the guitar gets just as excited as I do the more aggressive my playing gets. It eggs me on, like it’s saying “oh yeah? What else?”. You could use the guitar for just about anything, the pickups and neck are that user-friendly, but I feel like it thrives on a gain channel and fast picking. The Cicero handles articulation wonderfully. And yet, it is just as happy to let chords ring out for as long as you’d like.

Guitar Thrills: When you step on stage, what are you chasing more: technical perfection, emotional connection, or that unpredictable “live moment” where anything can happen?

Leilani: Connection and that lightning strike over perfection. My technique is pretty good, but some of my best self-expression happens when I let that slip and focus on the feel. I know there’s an audience out there for technical performance but that’s simply not my style. I love feeling the crowd get as excited, angry, broken, or joyful as I am as a result of the emotion I’m putting into my playing.

Guitar Thrills: Looking ahead, do you see yourself staying rooted in blues-rock, or do you feel like you’re moving toward something that doesn’t quite have a label yet?

Leilani: There’s something bigger on the horizon. That being said, blues is carved into the bones of my fingers and the beat of my heart, and it will always be present. But I think it’s time to let the throttle out a bit too.

Conclusion: The Edge of What’s Next

Leilani Kilgore represents more than just another rising name in blues-rock—she reflects a turning point in how guitar music is evolving. Where previous generations worked to preserve tradition or modernize it, Kilgore seems to be doing something more instinctive: reshaping it in real time. Her playing doesn’t ask for permission from the past—it acknowledges it, then pushes forward with urgency and intent.

What makes her trajectory compelling isn’t just her technical ability or stage presence, but the sense that she hasn’t settled yet. In a landscape where many artists quickly define their lane, Kilgore remains in motion—absorbing influences, testing boundaries, and refining a sound that feels increasingly her own. That openness is often where the most important artistic breakthroughs happen.

From a guitar perspective, the excitement lies in that tension between control and chaos, tradition and disruption. Kilgore thrives in that space. Her tone, attack, and songwriting suggest an artist who isn’t interested in simply carrying the blues forward, but in transforming it into something sharper, louder, and more immediate.

If this current wave of artists has proven that blues can evolve, then Leilani Kilgore may be part of the next step—where genre lines blur entirely, and the guitar becomes less about legacy and more about expression in its rawest form.

And that’s where the real thrill begins—not in looking back, but in watching an artist step into something bigger than the genre that introduced her.
