Country music has always had a way of making room for artists who understand that authenticity matters more than simply fitting a mold. For K.C. Johns, that connection to country music is not about following a formula—it is about finding her own voice within a genre built on storytelling, emotion, and real-life experience.

Today, Johns finds herself at an important point in her career. A recent career milestone has provided another indication that the work she has put into developing herself as an artist is beginning to open new doors. But for Johns, the milestone is more than something to add to a résumé. It represents momentum—and an opportunity to look at where she has been, where she is now, and where she wants to go next.

INTERVIEW WITH K.C. JOHNS AND GUITAR THRILLS MAGAZINE

Guitar Thrills: When you think about yourself as a country artist today, what does that identity mean to you? What is it about country music that feels like home, and what do you believe makes your approach to the genre uniquely yours?

KC Johns: Country music feels like home because storytelling has always been the most important part of music to me. I grew up in Mississippi in a rodeo family, so country music wasn't something I discovered later, it was just part of my life. But I've also always loved rock & roll and artists who weren't afraid to be loud or a little rebellious.

I think that's where I found my lane. I'm country at the core, but there's a lot of rock & roll in the way I perform, the way I write and the way I carry myself onstage. I've never wanted to fit perfectly into one box. That's more important to me than fitting whatever country music is supposed to look or sound like now.

Guitar Thrills: You recently reached an important milestone in your career. What did that moment mean to you personally, and when you look back at everything it took to reach that point, what stands out the most?

KC Johns: The biggest thing I feel right now is gratitude. I don’t look at any milestone as something I did by myself. There are people on my team, people who have invested in and believed in me, musicians who have spent countless hours on the road with me, and people behind the scenes who have helped build this right alongside me.

I've spent years on the road playing everything from bars where you're singing four hours a night to festivals, fairs, rodeos and stages all over the U.S. and overseas. There have been a lot of miles, a lot of nights where things didn't go according to plan, and plenty of moments where I've had to ask myself how badly I really wanted this.

So, when you hit those milestones and start seeing songs connect, crowds grow and bigger opportunities come in, it means more because you know what happened behind the scenes to get there. People usually see the announcement or the number. I see every van ride, every load-in, every almost-empty room, every sold-out room, every "no," and every person who believed in me before there was a reason to.

This career also teaches you a lot about people. You learn who genuinely wants to see you succeed, who is there for the right reasons, and sometimes you learn those lessons the hard way. I think every experience — good and bad — has made me even more appreciative of the people around me who really do show up and believe in what we're building.

Guitar Thrills: Milestones can change the way an artist looks at their career. Has this accomplishment changed the way you think about where you are headed or what you want to accomplish next?

KC Johns: Absolutely. If anything, I've become much more intentional about how I get there.

I've learned that not every opportunity is the right opportunity, and not everyone who says they want to help build your career necessarily needs to have a hand in it. You must know your own business, protect the opportunities you've worked for, ask questions and pay attention when something doesn't feel right.

One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that access to your career should be earned, not assumed. There are a lot of incredible people in this industry, but there can also be a lot of BS. You have to learn the difference between someone who is genuinely helping you move forward and someone who might be holding you back, steering you in the wrong direction or not protecting the opportunities you've worked hard to create.

At the same time, those experiences have made me appreciate the right people even more. I'm incredibly grateful for the team around me who genuinely believes in what we're building. The people I want at my table are the ones who want to see all of us win.

I don't want to grow just for the sake of saying we're growing. I want to build something sustainable with people I trust, while still being able to look in the mirror and recognize the artist and person, I've always been.

Guitar Thrills: What are you working on right now that has you most excited? Are there particular projects, songs, performances, or opportunities that you feel are helping define this current chapter of your career?

KC Johns: The new music, hands down. I feel like I'm finally making music that captures the artist I've been becoming onstage for the last several years.

The next single is a big part of that next chapter. There's an attitude to this new music that feels natural to me. it's country, it's rock & roll, it's fun, and it doesn't apologize for taking up space.

We've also been building the live show around that same mentality. I play a lot of dates every year, and being on the road has probably shaped me as much as songwriting has. You figure out quickly what connects with people when you're standing in front of them night after night.

And when I say "we," I really mean that. There are so many people behind an artist that the audience may never see. My band, crew, team and the people handling things behind the scenes allow me to walk onstage every night and do what I love. I don't take that for granted.

I want this next batch of music to feel like somebody finally bottled what happens at our show. 

Guitar Thrills: Country music continues to evolve, with artists bringing their own influences and experiences into the genre. What do you think you bring to country music that is distinctly K.C. Johns?

KC Johns: A little Mississippi, a lot of miles, a little rodeo and a whole lot of rock & roll. Growing up I fell in love with artists like Sheryl Crow, Joan Jett and Fleetwood Mac. I love songs with teeth. I love a lyric that can break your heart, but I also love walking onstage and making people feel like they're at a rock show.

And I think there's a toughness in my music that comes from living this career. I've been out there doing it, driving the miles, playing the long shows, getting said no, getting knocked down and figuring out how to get back up. I don't want to manufacture an "outlaw" image. I'd rather just tell you what happened and turn the amps up.

That's probably the most "me" thing I could do.

Guitar Thrills: As your career continues to develop, what parts of yourself do you never want to lose as an artist?

KC Johns: My independence, my sense of humor and my ability to connect with people.

I never want to get so caught up in the "business" of being an artist that I forget why I started doing this. I still want to be the person who hangs out after the show, talks to people, laughs when everything goes wrong and can find something worth writing about in the middle of a 12-hour drive.

And I never want success to make me afraid to say what I think. The artists I've always admired have a point of view. You may love them or hate them, but you know who they are. I want to keep becoming a better artist without sanding down all the weird edges that made me one in the first place.

Guitar Thrills: When you look ahead to the next chapter, what do you want people to know about where K.C. Johns is going? What are the goals that are still sitting at the top of your list?

KC Johns: I'm going bigger — but I'm also getting more intentional.

I want songs that reach people way beyond the rooms I'm already playing. I want bigger stages. I want to keep touring internationally. I want to build a live show that people talk about after they leave. I want songs on country radio, and I want to keep pushing the boundaries of what people expect a country artist to sound and look like.

But more than anything, I want longevity.

I've already learned that this career isn't one big break where suddenly everything changes. It's a thousand little breaks, a thousand decisions and a thousand times you decide to keep going.

I'm proud of what I've built so far, now I want to see how far I can take it. 

Looking Ahead

Every career has moments that can be measured—new releases, bigger stages, important performances, milestones and opportunities. But the more meaningful measure of an artist's career is often what those moments represent. For K.C. Johns, this appears to be a period of movement.

Her recent accomplishment provides a reason to celebrate, but it also creates a natural starting point for the next chapter. The more important question is what she does with the momentum. Country music continues to welcome artists who bring something personal to the conversation, and Johns has an opportunity to define what that means for herself. As she moves forward with new projects and new opportunities, the goal is not simply to become another name in country music. It is to establish a sound, identity, and career that are unmistakably her own. The milestone may mark how far she has come.
