INTERVIEW WITH SARA BALDWIN AND GUITAR THRILLS MAGAZINE

Guitar Thrills: Independent artists often have complete creative freedom, but that freedom comes with a great deal of responsibility. How do you balance the creative side of making music with the business side of building a career?

Sara Baldwin: I don’t separate art from life. To me, everything is art, and every experience has the potential to become a song. Creativity isn’t something you turn on when you pick up an instrument, it’s a way of moving through this life. Because of that, when I’m writing, I’m not thinking about marketing, or what’s expected of me. I want to be completely immersed in the music and let it become whatever it’s meant to be. Once the creative work has been fully expressed, I intentionally shift into a different mindset. I let the art lead, and the business to support what was created with honesty.

Guitar Thrills: Your music has always reflected authenticity rather than chasing trends. How important has it been for you to stay true to your own artistic vision, even when the industry is constantly evolving?

Sara Baldwin: For me, it’s easy to stay true to my own voice because I don’t know how to create any other way. I’ve never sat down to write a song thinking about trends or algorithms. I write from a place that’s honest, and I trust that if it moves me, it’ll find the people it’s meant to reach. I also make a conscious effort to protect that honesty. Spending time in nature, embracing silence, and stepping away from social media helps me reconnect with myself instead of the constant noise around me. Those moments remind me why I create in the first place. At the end of the day, I’d rather create something that’s real than something that’s popular. Trends come and go, but authenticity has a way of lasting. If my music gives someone permission to feel, heal, or simply know they’re not alone, that’s far more meaningful to me than chasing what’s popular

Guitar Thrills: Songwriting can be a deeply personal process. When you're creating new music, do you write primarily for yourself first, or do you think about how your audience will connect with the song?

Sara Baldwin: I always write for myself first. I’ve learned that the more honest I’m willing to be, the more likely a song is to connect with someone else. If I start thinking about what people want to hear, I lose the truth of why I picked up the guitar in the first place. Ironically, the more personal a song becomes, the more universal it seems to be. If someone finds a piece of their own story in one of my songs, that’s the greatest compliment I could receive.

Guitar Thrills: Social media has become a major part of an artist's career. How do you maintain a genuine connection with your fans while navigating the demands of promoting your music online?

Sara Baldwin: To be completely honest, I don’t spend much time on social media anymore. I’ve found that my energy is better spent creating than constantly posting. Social media is an incredible tool, but I try not to let it become the focus. I’d rather pour my heart into the music and let the songs speak for themselves. If they resonate with someone, that connection will always mean more to me than anything I could manufacture online.

Guitar Thrills: Looking back on your journey so far, was there a moment when you realized this wasn't just a passion anymore—it had become the career you truly wanted to pursue?

Sara Baldwin: As an independent artist, I also own a business and work outside of music, and I’m genuinely grateful for both. They give me the freedom to create without placing expectations on my music. I don’t separate music from the rest of my life. Everything I do is art. Whether I’m writing a song, spending time in nature, or simply paying attention to the world around me, it’s all part of the same creative process.

Guitar Thrills: Every artist faces challenges that fans rarely see. What has been one of the biggest obstacles you've overcome as an independent musician, and what did it teach you?

Sara Baldwin: I don’t really see things as obstacles as much as opportunities to grow. If anything, the greatest challenge has been trusting that simply creating is enough. I’ve learned it’s easy to feel like I always need to do more, be more, or constantly prove myself. Over time, I’ve learned to come back to why I create in the first place. For me, success is showing up, creating honestly, and trusting that the music will find the people it’s meant to find.

Guitar Thrills: As both a guitarist and songwriter, does one usually inspire the other? Does a great riff spark the lyrics, or do the words often come first?

Sara Baldwin:  I don’t have a set process when it comes to writing. Throughout the day, I’m constantly writing down lyrics, poetry and thoughts as they come to me. Then there are other moments when I pick up my guitar with no agenda and simply play whatever feels good. Sometimes the melody, the lyrics, and the guitar all arrive at the same time, and those moments feel magical. Eventually, they all find each other. With my current project, She Who Burns, I’m writing all the music and guitar parts before passing them on to my singer, Dana Christine. I’ve looked to Dana for creative insight on my solo music for years, so creating a band together has felt like a natural evolution. We trust each other’s instincts, and always let the song lead the way. I’m genuinely thrilled to be creating this music alongside her.

Guitar Thrills: Success can mean different things to different artists. When you think about your career today, how has your definition of success changed since you first started making music?

Sara Baldwin: To me, success has always meant being able to create music while also enjoying the life, I’ve created for myself. I get to live in the mountains, help people, travel and experience a sense of freedom that I never take for granted. Not freedom from hard work, but freedom from expectations and the feeling that I always need more. I’m happiest when I’m creating, living with intention, and appreciating the process instead of chasing the destination. If I can continue making music while living a life that feels meaningful, that’s success to me.

Guitar Thrills: Finally, if someone discovers Sara Baldwin's music for the very first time, what do you hope they take away—not just from your songs, but from who you are as an artist?

Sara Baldwin: I never really had a moment where I decided to make music my career. I just reached a point where I wanted to release the songs I was writing. The creative process has always been my favorite part. I love sitting down with my guitar with no agenda and seeing what unfolds. I love creating melodies, finding the right lyric, and watching an idea slowly become a song. That’s what keeps me coming back. I know a lot of artists dream of making music their full-time career, touring the world, and building their lives around it. I have a lot of respect for that path, but mine has always been a little different. I love my quiet life in the mountains, walking barefoot by a stream with my dog every morning and having the freedom to create because I genuinely love creating. Releasing my music has never been about chasing a destination—it has simply been my way of sharing what I create while continuing to live a life that inspires me to keep creating.
