INTERVIEW WITH ALBERT CASTIGLIA AND GUITAR THRILLS MAGAZINE

Guitar Thrills: You've built a reputation as one of the most passionate live performers in blues. What is your mindset every time you walk onto a stage?

Albert Castiglia: Have fun, give all you got to the audience, leave your baggage before you get on stage and remember how blessed you are to be doing this for a living.

Guitar Thrills: Your career began with the legendary Junior Wells. What was the most valuable lesson you learned from him that still influences you today?

Albert Castiglia: I learned a lot from Junior but the greatest lesson I learned from him was the importance of connecting with your audiences. Watching him night after night was a masterclass in that. Being vulnerable, opening up and being fearless. That’s what it’s all about. Just playing is not enough. When you make the audience feel like they’re a part of the show, they will in turn give you the positive energy that will get you through and make the show successful.

Guitar Thrills: The blues is built on honesty and emotion. How do you keep that authenticity alive every time you perform?

Albert Castiglia: By writing and performing songs that are personal to me and pertinent to my life’s story. A great bluesman from The Tampa Bay area named Rock Bottom said “If you can’t live it, you can’t give it.” That pretty much sums it up.

Guitar Thrills: You've released several acclaimed albums over the years. Is there one record that you feel best represents you as an artist today, and why?

Albert Castiglia: It’s always the next one. Every album of mine is like a diary. It’s also a progression. I feel like every album I put out is better than the last one and the truest representation of who I am. There are albums that I’ve put out that will always stand out to me because of the journey I happened to be on prior to recording it. For instance, “Masterpiece” will always be special to me because it was inspired by my daughter finding me. It will always be the one closest to my heart. In terms of musicianship, the latest “Grits & Glory” is the best representation of me because of the incorporation of different elements that may have been absent in previous releases. The jazz and funk influences are quite prominent.

Guitar Thrills: As a guitarist, how has you’re playing evolved since you first began your career, and what do you continue to work on?

Albert Castiglia: As I’ve gotten older, my thirst for knowledge has increased. I’ve explored different styles and taken the parts that appealed to me and added it to my bag. My playing now is better than it’s ever been. I’m a lot better now than I was twenty years ago. That should be the ideal, to get better with time. Jeff Beck was a perfect example of that. His skills never diminished as he got older. His career was inspirational and that’s how I want to be. I want to keep getting better.

Guitar Thrills: Blues music continues to evolve while honoring its traditions. Where do you see the genre heading over the next decade?

Albert Castiglia: I’m excited! I think it’s going to be fine. I was at the recent Blues Music Awards in May and I saw the future that night. Kingfish Ingram, Sean Mack McDonald, D.K Harrell. Those guys are in their twenty’s, and they are all different branches of the blues tree. Jontavious Willis, Harrell Davenport, Marquis Knox and Angelique Francis are some others. What makes me even more excited is the increase in black representation, something the genre’s needed for a long time. All these folks I mentioned are young, black, and extremely talented artists. The future’s bright. The blues is alright and will be for a long time!

Guitar Thrills: Looking back over your career, what accomplishment are you most proud of, and what still motivates you to keep pushing forward?

Albert Castiglia: There were so many. My first blues music award, Playing Red Rocks, The Ryman, Recording my recent album at Abbey Road in London. This life has given me so much. Getting the gig with Junior Wells will always be my proudest moment. It was the beginning of my ascent to the middle!

Guitar Thrills: Finally, what do you hope audiences take away from an Albert Castiglia performance after the final note has been played?

Albert Castiglia: That I gave it everything I had.
