The Pulse of the Music: Why Bass Players Hear Songs Differently

Posted: July 8, 2026
"The bass doesn't ask for attention—it earns respect. The greatest bass players understand that music isn't built from the top down; it's built from the ground up, one groove, one heartbeat, and one perfectly placed note at a time." — Guitar Thrills Magazine

Ask a guitarist what they notice first in a song, and chances are they'll mention the riff. Ask a vocalist, and they'll probably talk about the melody or lyrics. Drummers naturally gravitate toward the groove. But ask a bassist, and you may get an entirely different answer.
They'll tell you how the song feels.

That's because bass players occupy one of the most unique positions in any band. They're not simply playing notes; they're connecting worlds. They stand between rhythm and melody, linking the drums to the guitars, supporting the vocals, and quietly holding everything together. If the bass disappears, most listeners may not immediately identify what's missing—but they'll certainly feel it.

Bass players have often been described as the glue that keeps a band together, and for good reason. While lead instruments tend to command attention, the bass provides stability. It establishes movement, creates tension and release, and gives a song its heartbeat. It's less about standing in the spotlight and more about making everyone else shine.

That's why many bass players develop a different relationship with music. They tend to listen beyond individual instruments, focusing instead on how every part interacts. A bass line isn't simply following the chords—it's shaping the emotional foundation of the song. Sometimes it pushes the music forward. Other times it pulls it back, creating space where the melody can breathe. It's a subtle art, but one that experienced musicians immediately recognize.
There's an old joke among musicians that if you want to know whether the bass player is doing a good job, turn the bass off for thirty seconds.
Suddenly the song feels…wrong.
Not broken.
Just incomplete.

It's a reminder that the best bass playing often goes unnoticed because it's doing exactly what it's supposed to do—serving the music rather than competing with it.
That philosophy is something Ruby Dice understands well.

Long before stepping into the spotlight as a singer-songwriter and bandleader, she earned respect as a bassist, developing the kind of musical instincts that come from supporting countless songs rather than dominating them. It's an experience that naturally shapes the way an artist approaches songwriting. Bass players often think in terms of feel before flash, groove before complexity, and chemistry before individual performance.
Perhaps that's why so many accomplished bassists become thoughtful collaborators. They're accustomed to listening as much as they play. Great bass players are constantly paying attention—to the drummer's dynamics, the vocalist's phrasing, the guitarist's rhythm, and the subtle moments that hold everything together. They're not simply performing; they're participating in a conversation.

That perspective carries over into songwriting as well. A bassist often approaches a new song by asking different questions. Instead of wondering how to make a part stand out, they're more likely to ask, "What does this song need?" Sometimes the answer is a memorable bass line. Sometimes it's restraint. Knowing the difference is what separates a good musician from a great one.

Ruby Dice's career reflects that mindset. Whether performing with her own band or collaborating with other musicians throughout Austin's vibrant music community, she has demonstrated an appreciation for the collective nature of making music. Her songs blend Americana, country, soul, blues, and rock, but beneath those influences lies the steady musical foundation that comes from years of thinking like a bassist. It's a perspective rooted in connection rather than competition, one that values the song above individual recognition.
In today's music industry, where dazzling solos and viral moments often grab the headlines, it's easy to overlook the quiet importance of the rhythm section. Yet every memorable performance depends on musicians who understand that great music isn't about being the loudest voice in the room. It's about creating something larger than any one instrument could achieve alone.
Bass players have understood that all along.

Artists such as Jason Isbell, Brandi Carlile, and Chris Stapleton continue this tradition today. Their songs frequently draw from real experiences and emotions, creating connections that feel sincere and lasting. Their success demonstrates that authenticity remains one of the most valuable qualities a songwriter can possess.

For artists like Mary Kutter, songwriting represents more than simply creating music—it is an opportunity to share stories, experiences, and perspectives that others may relate to in their own lives. In an industry constantly evolving through technology, social media, and changing trends, the fundamental power of storytelling remains unchanged.

At its core, songwriting is about connection. The songs that endure are often the ones that remind listeners they are not alone in what they feel. Whether the story comes from heartbreak, hope, triumph, or self-discovery, relatable lyrics have the power to bridge the gap between artist and audience. Long after production styles change and trends fade, genuine storytelling continues to be one of music's most powerful and enduring forces. me.

They don't simply hear the music.
They hear how every piece fits together.
And perhaps that's why the best bassists become more than musicians—they become listeners first.

About Ruby Dice

Music has a way of revealing an artist's personality long before they say a word, and for Ruby Dice, that personality is rooted in authenticity, musicianship, and an unmistakable love for performing. An Austin-based Americana artist, bassist, singer-songwriter, and bandleader, Dice has built a reputation for blending country, rock, soul, and blues into a sound that feels both timeless and refreshingly modern. Originally from Gunnison, Colorado, she brings together the rugged spirit of her mountain roots with the rich musical traditions of Texas, creating songs that are equal parts heartfelt storytelling and infectious groove.

Before stepping into the spotlight as a solo artist, Ruby spent years establishing herself as a respected bassist, performing with a wide variety of bands and developing the versatility that continues to define her musicianship. Her experience on stages across the country, including performances alongside artists such as Brian Wilson and Dale Watson, helped shape her approach to songwriting while earning her recognition within the Austin music community. More recently, she was voted Best Bassist in Austin, a reflection of both her technical ability and her growing influence as a performer.

Ruby's debut album, Not In Love, marked an important milestone in her evolution as a songwriter. Recorded in collaboration with Gordy Quist and members of Band of Heathens, the album showcases her ability to blend soulful melodies, roots-driven arrangements, and emotionally honest lyrics into music that is both deeply personal and broadly relatable. Whether performing with her full band or in a more intimate setting, Ruby's performances are known for their warmth, energy, and genuine connection with audiences.
Beyond her own recordings, Ruby Dice remains an active collaborator within Austin's thriving music scene, working alongside fellow artists while continuing to expand her creative vision. She is currently developing a collaborative album and documentary project celebrating the city's musical community, further demonstrating her belief that music is at its best when it brings people together. Through every performance, every song, and every collaboration, Ruby Dice continues to establish herself as an artist whose passion for storytelling is matched only by her dedication to the musicians and community that inspire it.

INTERVIEW WITH RUBY DICE AND GUITAR THRILLS MAGAZINE

Guitar Thrills: You built your reputation as a bassist before stepping into the spotlight as a singer-songwriter. How has your experience as a bassist influenced the way you write and arrange your music?

Ruby: I'm incredibly grateful for the years I spent backing so many incredible artists. I learned the ins and outs of songwriting from some truly gifted writers, and I had the opportunity to see firsthand how great bands are built and led. Playing across so many different genres also taught me how subtle musical choices can completely change the way an audience feels. I've watched crowds across the country respond differently to a bass line that's swung versus one that's played straight. Those experiences shaped the way I hear music.
At the end of the day, writing and performing feel like a spiritual conversation with an audience. Sound waves become a river of emotion that we all get to float down together, and the bass is the oar, quietly guiding where that journey goes.

That perspective naturally found its way into my own music. My songs tend to be groove-driven and bass-forward. Even when the bass lines are simple, I want the groove to pull you somewhere you didn't expect and make you feel something before you even realize why.

Guitar Thrills: Bass players often say they hear music differently than other musicians. Do you agree with that, and if so, how has that perspective shaped your approach to performing and songwriting?

Ruby: Bass players absolutely hear music differently. It’s our job to connect the kick drum to the vocals or whatever is leading the melody at the time. I think of music like constructing a house. The drums are the foundation, the melody is the roof, and the bass is the frame that holds it all together. Just like a house you don’t always see those 2x4’s sticking out. But without them that house wouldn’t stand. Since I sing while I play bass I tend to write my melodies around those bass lines. It is a huge influence on how my songs end up sounding.

Guitar Thrills: You've performed with a variety of artists throughout your career. What have those collaborations taught you about musicianship and working as part of a band?

Ruby: Working with so many different artists has taught me that there isn't just one right way to make great music. Every musician brings something different to the table, and every band has its own chemistry. I've been lucky enough to learn from artists across country, soul, blues, rock, Americana, pop, and beyond, and each one has influenced the way I approach both music and people. More than anything, it's taught me to listen. The best musicians aren't necessarily the ones who play the most notes, they're the ones who know how to support the song and elevate everyone around them. A great band is built on trust, humility, and communication. Everyone has to be willing to leave their ego at the door and serve something bigger than themselves.

Those collaborations have also reminded me that music is a conversation. Every show is different because every room is different, and every audience brings its own energy. The band is constantly listening and responding, not just to each other, but to the crowd. That's one of the things I love most about live music. It's never exactly the same twice, and when everyone is truly connected, those are the moments people remember.

Guitar Thrills: Austin has long been recognized as one of the world's great music cities. What is it about the Austin music community that continues to inspire and support artists like yourself?

Ruby: What has always made Austin special isn't just the music, it's the people behind it. This city is filled with artists who genuinely want to see each other succeed. Instead of treating one another like competition, there's a culture of collaboration. It's not uncommon to see musicians from completely different genres sharing a stage, sitting in on each other's records, or showing up to support one another's shows. That kind of community is rare.
Austin has also always embraced authenticity. It's a city that celebrates people who have something honest to say, regardless of whether they fit neatly into one genre. That freedom has allowed me to grow not only as a songwriter and performer, but also as a filmmaker. My Take Me Back album and documentary "Making A Life Out of Art" were born from that spirit of collaboration, bringing together artists from across Austin's incredibly diverse music scene to celebrate what makes this city so unique.

At a time when Austin is changing so quickly, I think it's more important than ever to document and support the creative community that gave this city its identity. The music scene isn't just entertainment, it's the heartbeat of Austin. I'm incredibly grateful to be a small part of helping preserve that story.

Guitar Thrills: Making the transition from sidemusician to frontwoman is a significant step. What challenges did you face during that transition, and what has been the most rewarding part of leading your own band?

Ruby: Becoming a full-time frontwoman was really born out of necessity. When the pandemic hit, I watched many established artists pivot to livestreams. They already had an audience they could perform for, people who would tune in, support them, and leave tips. Like so many sidemen and sidewomen, I was left wondering where I fit into that world. We weren't the artists people were tuning in to see, and there simply wasn't much room for the supporting musicians during that time.

That experience, combined with having tours canceled at the last minute over the years, made me realize that if I wanted a sustainable career, I needed to build something of my own. It wasn't about leaving behind being a bassist, I still love playing bass, it was about creating something that I could grow for the long term.
The transition wasn't without its challenges. I'd spent years playing clubs all over Austin with other artists, but when I started booking under my own name, I was suddenly the "new" artist. Earning those opportunities all over again was humbling. Thankfully, venues like Sagebrush and White Horse believed in me early on. Dennis and Marshall have been the backbone for so many struggling artists, myself included. They gave countless musicians a place to develop, build an audience, and find their footing. I honestly don't know where I'd be without people like them who invest in local music before anyone else sees the potential.

Guitar Thrills: You've become an advocate for collaboration within the Austin music community. Why do you believe working together is so important, and how has collaboration helped you grow as an artist?

Ruby: Working together is incredibly important. Not just in music, but in every aspect of life. As my big brother always says, "Teamwork makes the dream work." It sounds simple, but it's true.
I learned the most about music when I was playing in ten bands a week. Every artist had a different way of writing, arranging, rehearsing, and leading a band. When I realized I wanted to become a better songwriter myself, I booked as many co-writing sessions as I could. Every writer had a different strength, and I picked up new techniques from each of them. Those collaborations made me a better songwriter far faster than trying to figure everything out on my own.

I approach making records the same way. I rely heavily on my band because they bring ideas and instincts that I simply can't. I don't play their instruments the way they do, so I trust them to interpret the songs and make them better. I've learned that finding the right people and giving them the freedom to do what they do best almost always leads to something greater than what I could have created alone. I've honestly never found a downside to collaboration. You share contacts and opportunities. You share ideas and inspiration. More importantly, you build relationships that last far beyond a single song or performance. I've never believed in a scarcity mindset. There is enough opportunity for everyone, and when we genuinely help each other succeed, the entire music community becomes stronger. In my experience, what you put out into the world has a way of coming back to you.

Guitar Thrills: Looking back on your career, what accomplishment are you most proud of, and what goals are you still striving to achieve as both a musician and songwriter?

Ruby: I honestly have a hard time celebrating accomplishments. I've always been pretty forward-driven, so as soon as I hit one milestone, I'm already thinking about the next. That said, being voted "Best Bass Player" by the Austin Chronicle was incredibly meaningful. It was the first award I'd ever received like that, and at the time I was working harder than I ever had. It felt like a little shot in the arm. A reminder that all those years of playing hundreds of shows hadn't gone unnoticed. I still don't think I'm the best bass player in town by a long shot, which honestly makes the recognition even more humbling. The fact that people took the time to vote for me is something I'll always be grateful for. Another moment that didn't fully sink in until years later was getting to share the stage with Brian Wilson. I was pretty young at the time, so I don't think I appreciated just how extraordinary that experience was. Looking back, it's one of the coolest moments of my career.

As for what's next, my goals have shifted a little. Of course I want to keep writing better songs and growing as a performer, but I also want to leave something meaningful behind. That's a big part of why I created Take Me Back and the accompanying documentary Making A Life Out Of Art. I want to contribute something that celebrates the Austin music community and helps preserve its story. If, years from now, people remember me not only for the songs I wrote but for the artists and community I helped bring together, I'd consider that a life well spent.

Guitar Thrills: Finally, if someone is hearing Ruby Dice for the very first time, what do you hope they remember—not only about your music, but about the artist behind it?

Ruby: I hope they remember that I cared. I cared about the songs, I cared about the people I got to make music with, and I cared about the community that helped shape me as an artist.
More than anything, I hope my music makes people feel something. Whether it's joy, nostalgia, heartbreak, or just the feeling of rolling the windows down on a summer day, I want people to walk away with an emotion that stays with them. To me, that's what great music does.
I also hope people remember that I tried to leave this community a little better than I found it. Whether that's through collaborating with other artists, mentoring younger musicians, or creating projects like Take Me Back and the documentary Making A Life Out of Art, I've always believed that music is bigger than any one person. If my career can encourage someone else to create, collaborate, or take a chance on another artist, then I'll feel like I've done my job. At the end of the day, I just want to make honest music with people I love and leave behind something that's worth remembering.

Ruby Dice reminds us that great musicianship isn't always about standing at the front of the stage—it's about understanding the role every note plays in telling a story. Her journey from accomplished bassist to respected singer-songwriter and bandleader reflects a career built on collaboration, authenticity, and an unwavering passion for music. As she continues to grow as an artist, one thing remains constant: her commitment to creating songs that connect with listeners while celebrating the spirit of the musical community around her.
