Let's face it—being a great guitarist isn't always enough anymore. The music industry has changed dramatically over the last decade, and artists today are expected to do much more than write songs and perform. They are building brands, creating content, engaging with fans, and managing their careers in ways that previous generations never had to consider. While some musicians view this as an added challenge, others have embraced it as an opportunity to connect directly with audiences and take control of their future.

One of the most misunderstood concepts in music is branding. Many artists hear the word and immediately think of logos, websites, or social media graphics. While those things certainly play a role, branding is really about identity. It's what people think of when they hear your name. The strongest artist brands are built around consistency and authenticity. Whether it's a legendary guitarist like Slash or a modern artist building an audience online, the common thread is that fans know exactly who they are and what they represent. A strong brand isn't something that is manufactured—it grows naturally from an artist's personality, values, and passion for music.

Authenticity has become one of the most valuable assets a musician can possess. In a world filled with curated social media feeds and endless content, audiences have become remarkably good at recognizing what is genuine and what isn't. Fans don't just want polished performances; they want to connect with the person behind the instrument. The artists who continue to grow are often those who share their journey, their challenges, their victories, and even their setbacks. People connect with real stories, and that connection often becomes the foundation for long-term fan loyalty.

Unfortunately, many new artists make avoidable mistakes when trying to establish themselves online. One of the biggest is attempting to be everything to everyone. They jump from trend to trend, constantly changing direction in hopes of attracting attention. While that approach may generate short-term engagement, it often creates confusion about who the artist actually is. Another common mistake is focusing too heavily on follower counts and viral moments. Numbers can be impressive, but they don't always translate into meaningful fan relationships. A smaller audience that genuinely supports an artist is often far more valuable than a massive audience that barely engages with their content. Successful artists understand that building a community is more important than chasing statistics.

Another topic that frequently comes up is management. Many artists assume that landing a manager is the key to unlocking career success, but the reality is more complicated. A good manager can be an incredible asset, helping to secure opportunities, organize schedules, negotiate business arrangements, and provide valuable guidance. However, not every manager is the right fit. A poor management relationship can create frustration, slow momentum, and sometimes push an artist in directions that don't align with their vision. In many cases, the strongest management partnerships happen after an artist has already demonstrated the ability to build an audience and generate opportunities independently. The right manager can help accelerate growth, but they should complement an artist's efforts rather than replace them.

Some of the most successful musicians have figured out how to balance artistry and business without sacrificing either. They understand that every interview, social media post, live performance, and piece of content contributes to a larger story. Rather than chasing every trend, they focus on reinforcing what makes them unique. Artists who have built sustainable careers often share one common trait: they stay true to themselves while remaining consistent in how they present their music and message to the world. Their success isn't just the result of talent; it's the result of understanding how to communicate that talent effectively.

That brings us to "Ariel" (the artist formerly known as Ariel Bellvalaire)a guitarist who appears exceptionally well-positioned for long-term success in today's music landscape. While her technical ability on the instrument is undeniable, what makes her stand out goes beyond her playing. Ariel has built a recognizable presence that feels authentic and approachable. Her content reflects a genuine passion for guitar and music rather than a calculated attempt to chase online trends. She understands the importance of connecting with her audience while remaining true to herself, and that authenticity resonates with fans. By combining strong musicianship with a consistent identity and an engaging online presence, she has created a foundation that many aspiring artists strive to achieve. In an industry where visibility and connection are increasingly important, Ariel's approach demonstrates how modern artists can successfully blend creativity, branding, and authenticity without losing sight of who they are. The music industry will continue to evolve, and the tools artists use to reach audiences will undoubtedly change. However, some principles remain timeless. Talent may open doors, but authenticity, consistency, and meaningful connections are what sustain careers. The artists who thrive are rarely the ones trying to be someone else. They're the ones who understand who they are, embrace it, and share that story with the world. As artists like Ariel Bellvalaire continue to demonstrate, success in today's music business isn't about choosing between artistry and branding—it's about allowing both to work together

INTERVIEW WITH ARIEL BELLVALAIRE AND GUITAR THRILLS MAGAZINE

Guitar Thrills: Every guitarist has a story. What was the moment that made you realize music wasn't just a hobby but something you wanted to pursue seriously?

Ariel:  I was actually very young when I was first drawn to music, probably 8 or 9 and it was when I heard Avril Lavigne on the radio for the first time while in gymnastics summer camp. I’m not sure what exactly came over me but it was inthat moment where I was like “I have to do this. I’m meant to be an artist.” It never felt like a hobby, just something that I knew I had to do. Thankfully I loved it because it definitely didn’t always come easy! I started out as a singer and then began playing guitar at 12 years old. From day one of playing guitar, I sang while playing so it felt natural. At 15 years old I was really taking my artistry seriously, had an entire album written of original music and began working with professiona producers. It’s been quite the journey!

Guitar Thrills: Your online presence has helped you connect with guitar enthusiasts around the world. How has social media changed the way you approach your career as a musician?

Ariel: Thank you! Social media really has been the gateway that got me into the music industry. I started posting guitar solo covers on Youtube as a teenager and had one video go viral. That video helped me get noticed and I began getting calls for actual shows. I had to put in so much work to prepare for every show so I could continue to perform live regularly but it was the visibility of putting myself online that got me the initial opportunities. Now, social media is your biggest calling card. It’s the thing everyone looks at first so I’ve been focusing on creating a visual identity along with my music. There’s so much more to being an artist than just the music these days and it’s great to get yourself out there!

Guitar Thrills: Many players spend years searching for their sound. How would you describe your playing style, and what influences helped shape it?

Ariel: Being a singer songwriter before picking up a guitar definitely shaped my playing! When I’m coming up with solos, I don’t think of it in a musical theory way first. I hear the solos in my head, sing them and then figure it out on the guitar. I’m most definitely a rocker at heart though and have always been influenced by Slash, Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads and punk/rock music in general. I love having inspired riffs from my heros here and there!

Guitar Thrills: Authenticity has become increasingly important in today's music industry. How do you stay true to yourself while navigating social media and audience expectations?

Ariel: You know, it’s actually really hard to stay true to yourself at times in today’s day and age with everyone having opinions about everything you do and constantly being bombarded with so many “picture perfect” things circulating online. I have moments where I question everything but at the end of the day, when I listen to my music it just feels so right and that feeling lets me know I’m staying true to myself. It is important to try everything, including different styles because when you do find the thing that is authentically you, it feels so good and the things that influence you the most could be things outside your comfort zone. Everything is a learning experience to get you there.

Guitar Thrills: Looking back on your journey so far, what has been the biggest challenge you've faced as a guitarist, and what did you learn from it?

Ariel: I’d say as a guitarist the biggest challenge has been performing high profile shows in styles outside of my comfort zone. The shows that scare me the most have definitely made me grow the most. For these types of gigs, I'll spend countless hours a day for as many days as I can working on the songs and getting them stage ready. It’s definitely hard sometimes but there are so many new techniques I’ve learned from each challenge song. Getting through these types of shows really helps boost your confidence as a performer and player as well.

Guitar Thrills: For aspiring musicians trying to build their own audience, what advice would you give about branding, consistency, and standing out in a crowded online space?

Ariel: The most important thing is to keep learning and putting yourself out there.Nothing will ever feel perfect to you (trust me) but it’s important to just post it anyway. You’ll keep learning and growing from each new song and post which can lead to more opportunities. Having a brand and visual identity is so important as an artist too, find something that stands out about yourself (it could be your hair, fashion, personality, a favorite color, literally anything) and try to showcase it in all your content so your page has a cohesive vibe and don’t be afraid to experiment with different things until you find your identity! It takes time and work but is so worth it. In today’s crowded space, consistency of posting and personal interaction is everything. Just keep going!

Guitar Thrills: Let's talk gear. Is there a particular guitar, amplifier, or piece of equipment that has become essential to your sound?

Ariel: It’s funny, I’ve had many guitars but I always go back to my one favorite for literally everything I can. It’s my Fender Big Apple Stratocaster in Shoreline Gold. I love having double humbuckers in a strat. She has a Seymour Duncan Jeff Beck Pickup in the neck and a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge. The JB pickup gives such a nice buttery tone especially for cleaner things and the Super Distortion absolutely shreds. For the past few years I’ve been performing with a Kemper Stage and it’s been amazing. The tones are so customizable and I can use it for any type of show. It’s so versatile and it’s really nice not traveling with an amplifier all the time although whenever I get the chance to bring an amp, I love my Fender Deluxe Reverb.

Guitar Thrills: When you're not performing or creating content, how do you continue growing as a musician and keeping your creativity alive?

Ariel: When I’m not performing my own shows or content creating, I’m often learning new music to play with other artists. I absolutely love it because it forces me to get outside of my musical comfort zone and learn new genres and styles I wouldn’t normally play. It’s really important to constantly keep learning and I’ve found it sparks my creativity for my own music in different ways. I’ve found on my musical days off I really like making other kinds of art like clothing pieces and end up wearing them on stage. Thankfully the creativity is often alive and if it’s not, it’s time to go for a walk, get some rest or listen to something new to stay inspired.

Guitar Thrills: The music business is constantly evolving. What opportunities do you see for independent artists today that may not have existed a decade ago?

Ariel: Like we had talked about earlier, the music industry today is very social media focused. With that, there are a lot more opportunities as an independent artist available to you and it’s much easier to put yourself out there and be seen. Everyone is connected online and you can pitch yourself and your music around much easier. It’s really great in that respect and you can literally collaborate with anyone from around the world!

Guitar Thrills: Looking ahead, what goals, projects, or dreams are you most excited about pursuing over the next few years?

Ariel: I’m so excited for this next era! I’ve been working on new music for quite some time and it’s much more gritty and guitar driven but still has super catchy hooks. It almost feels a bit like going back to my roots. I’m beyond excited to be releasing it soon and touring internationally with it as well!! I really can’t wait for this next chapter!

Success in today's music industry requires far more than technical ability. It demands authenticity, consistency, and a willingness to connect with audiences on a meaningful level. Ariel Bellvalaire has demonstrated that modern musicians can embrace the business side of music without sacrificing their artistic identity. Through her musicianship, engaging presence, and commitment to her craft, she has built a foundation that continues to attract fans and inspire fellow guitarists around the world. As her career continues to evolve, one thing remains clear—Ariel represents a new generation of artists who understand that great music and genuine connection go hand in hand.
